It Started in Fifth Grade
Some friendships start because you live on the same street or end up in the same homeroom. Ours started over Pokémon cards.
Fifth grade. Lunch table. A binder full of holographics. That's all it took.
Like a lot of people our age, we eventually moved on — sports, high school, life. The cards got tucked into boxes in closets. But the love for the hobby never fully went away. It just went quiet for a while.
And Then It Came Rushing Back
Just last year, something clicked for both of us at the same time. We got back into Pokémon TCG — and it hit exactly as hard as it did when we were kids. The art, the hunt, the thrill of cracking a pack. All of it.
But something was different this time around.
The market had changed. Product was harder to find. Prices at big box stores were inconsistent. Online, you'd either overpay or wade through a sea of listings with no personality, no curation, no soul. It felt like the hobby had gotten expensive and complicated in ways that made it less fun — especially if you were just getting back into it or collecting casually.
We kept saying the same thing to each other: "Someone should just build a better shop for people like us."
So we did.

We built Rival Trading Co. around a few things we couldn't find anywhere else:

We're not here to get rich off collectors. We're collectors ourselves. We'd rather move product at a fair price and keep people coming back than squeeze every dollar out of a single sale. We price below market on everything — and we always will, because that's the whole point.
A curated inventory built with love, not just profit.
We spend a lot of time thinking about what goes into our shop. We're especially passionate about showcasing card art that gets overlooked in the hype cycle — the beautiful, underrated pulls that collectors who actually care about the art tend to appreciate. Pokémon card art is genuinely incredible, and we think it deserves more spotlight.
We're two guys who genuinely love this hobby.
That's not a marketing line. We're the same two kids from fifth grade who lost track of time talking about cards at a lunch table. Everything we do here is filtered through that — through genuine enthusiasm for collecting, not just the business side of it.
